The government of Egypt has announced the start of initial natural gas production at the West El-Burullus (WEB) offshore field in the Western Nile Delta, located in the Mediterranean Sea, boosting the North Africa nation’s energy capacity.
Karim Badawi, minister of petroleum and mineral resources in a statement said that production commenced after a tested output of 45 million cubic feet per day, was connected to the national gas grid.
“The West El Burullus field development and production project is considered as a prime example of integrated operations and optimal utilization of the capabilities of Egyptian petroleum sector companies in implementing major projects,” reads the statement in part.
The project, the minister added, is being implemented by the ministry in partnership with Cheiron Energy – Egypt’s leading gas and oil exploration and production company, through its joint venture with West El-Burullus Petroleum Company (Petroweb).
“We extend our appreciation to the ministry of petroleum and all partner teams for their valued efforts in bringing this strategic gas resource into production,” Cheiron Petroleum Corporation said in a separate statement.
The announcement followed Petroleum Marine Services’ successful completion of all offshore activities required for production at the West El-Burullus gas field.
The offshore activities included the installation of a 255-ton papyrus platform jacket, followed by the 330-ton topside deck, enabling precise and efficient lifting operations even under demanding offshore conditions.
Additionally, PMS completed the laying of a 14-inch, 32-kilometer subsea gas pipeline using state of the art offshore pipeline technologies, besides finalizing the installation of the WEB offshore platform under the same development project.
The project aims to maximize natural gas output from the West El-Burullus offshore field, contributing significantly to enhancing Egypt’s energy infrastructure and support the ministry’s vision of boosting production across natural gas fields.
Egypt is partnering with various sector players to boost domestic gas supplies and reduce imports, by accelerating field development and advancing exploration programs.
