The government of Kenya is targeting increased investments in hospitality infrastructure, marketing, and the conservation of the East Africa nation’s heritage and other attractions, with a view of boosting the country’s tourism sector.

Speaking during the opening of the 15th edition of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) in Nairobi on October 2, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said Kenya considers tourism a fundamental enabler and stimulus for investment, foreign exchange earnings and employment creation.

“Every tourist who comes to Kenya supports our agricultural sector through the food they consume; supports our transport sector by traveling on our roads, railways and airspace; supports our cottage industries by buying crafts; and supports the hospitality sector through the hotels, conference and entertainment facilities they patronize,” he said.

In 2024, the deputy president said, Kenya’s tourism numbers grew by 15% to hit 2.4 million, revenue rose by 20% to Sh452 billion shillings (approximately US$3.5 billion) while industry employment grew to 1.7 million jobs.

Rebecca Miano, minister for tourism and wildlife noted that tourism is more than just visitors. “It’s the future of our communities and the health of our environment,” she said, adding that her ministry is focused on reducing the country’s carbon footprint and embracing the vibrancy of Africa’s creative industries, namely; film, music, culture to offer truly unique and authentic experiences.

Through the integration of the Africa Tourism Investment Forum (ATIF) supported by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), they are creating a tangible bridge between global investors and vetted tourism entrepreneurs.

Kenya, she said, has set a target of welcoming over 5 million tourists by 2027.

“To meet our goal of 5.5 million visitors by 2027, we are committed to strategic infrastructure investments, diversifying our offerings and critically, placing sustainability at the core of our industry.”

“Sustainability isn’t just a trend; it’s a competitive advantage in today’s market hence the need to build a responsible and prosperous future for African tourism.”

MKTE is an annual travel trade event that showcases the diversity of Kenya’s tourism offerings, from its world-renowned wildlife safaris and pristine beaches to its rich cultural heritage and vibrant urban experiences.

The event provides tourists with an unrivalled opportunity to connect with top Kenyan travel professionals, forge strategic partnerships, and experience Kenya’s hospitality, offering travel agents, tour operators or travel enthusiasts a platform to expand networks.

Over 6,000 delegates from 40 nations across Africa and parts of the Caribbean attended this year’s event (1-3 October, 2025).
