South Africa based freight logistics company Grindrod Limited this week broke ground on the expansion of the Matola terminal, a major step to advancing Mozambique’s position as a strategic South African regional gateway, according to the company.

Engineer João Jorge Matlombe, Mozambique’s Minister of Transport and Logistics presided over the launch of the development of Phase 1 of the Back-of-Terminal (BOT), six months after President Daniel Francisco Chapo inaugurated Grindrod’s new administrative building.

According to Grindrod Limited, “Phase 1 represents a US$40 million investment and will fully mechanise the Back-of-Terminal area,” increasing capacity from 8 to 12 million tonnes per annum.

Through the development, the site will be expanded from 40, 800 to 157, 760 square meters, with completion expected in early 2027.

“This expansion strengthens the Maputo corridor and reinforces Mozambique’s position as a regional logistics hub,” said the Minister.

Maputo corridor is a major trade route linking the Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa with Maputo through road, rail, border posts, port and terminal facilities.

“The restart of this expansion marks a renewed commitment to operational excellence and competitive logistics solutions,” noted Kwazi Mabaso, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Grindrod Bulk and incoming Group CEO of Grindrod Limited.

Upon completion of Phase 1, Phase 2 which is still under the planning stage will integrate the Front and Back of Terminal, add new storage and load infrastructure to eventually handle up to 15 tonnes annually.
